Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA
Students have a bi-weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.
Describe something notable that either helped or did not help with studying for this midterm. Selected comments may be discussed in class. (Graded for completion.)
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"Lots of practice problems. Going over how other people did them and then doing them with only the data."
"Definitely reviewing all the blog posts, and doing the practice midterm questions under the goals portion of course website also helped."
"Components of applied forces can increase or decrease the normal force depending on the direction in which it is applied."
"Helpful: work hard and put the time in. Go to the tutor. Not helpful: Spending time on social media looking at non-physics stuff."
"Something that would help is review all of the midterm/final homework questions we've had and to review crucial laws."
"Just to slow down and think about the problem at hand, but not to over think it. Attending tutoring sessions is extremely helpful. Also communicating with other students and forming group study sessions is key to putting yourself in a position for success."
"Not only should you read the textbook and go over the presentation slides, but actually figure out the practice problems!"
"Reviewing problems and different methods."
"One thing that really helps me is having problems that will be similar to those on the exam to work out in advance of the test."
"Worksheet problems."
"I think just practicing the problems as many times as I can so I'm comfortable with solving them will help me the most."
"The midterm example questions will help a ton. I am going through all of them right now as practice problems."
"I'll be doing practice problems to get ready for this test, so the problems we have done in class will be helpful to me."
"Practicing multi-step questions that will be similar to what are on the exam and similar to how the professor words his problems. "
"Going over all the online examples should help me on the midterm."
"Having notes and especially all of those blogs will be very helpful in terms of studying."
"All the homework given to us."
"I'm going back over all of my previous notes and discovering where I have the most trouble understanding the subjects. I then try to go back and do as many problems as possible."
