Online reading assignment question: helpful/unhelpful astronomy midterm study tips

Astronomy 210, spring semester 2014
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA

Students have a weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.

Describe something notable that either helped or did not help with studying for this midterm. Selected comments may be discussed in class. (Graded for completion.)

The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"Not having a crazy amount of homework and other things like projects definitely opens up more time for hard studying I would say."

"The flashcards really help and knowing basically whats on the midterm so we don't get any unexpected questions to catch us off guard."

"Going back and looking at the worksheets we did was helpful because they help test your understanding and it was nice to have the repetition. They help to see what it is you want us to actually know, which is not just the definitions the textbook offers. (Now I know to bring these to class so that I can have filled out copies to refer back to!)"

"Thinking of inner space as outer space can kind of help visualize the laws of outer space, but only in a much smaller scale."

"I find it is helpful to look over the slide shows you use in class because I remember all the example you use to help us understand them so it helps me review."

"When practice on which type of moon phases, I usually try and remember which phases are which and then try to make the chart w/out a reference."

"Well, doing all of the flashcard questions before the past few quizzes has significantly helped my understanding and scores. I feel that I have a much better understanding of the topics we've been quizzed on then a lot of my fellow classmates. I've noticed that a lot of people just don't put in as much outside of class work as they do inside of class which is really detrimental to the learning process. I find this all to be really interesting just to think of it in a practical way, like finally being able to fully understand what goes on in and around our planet, which helps me learn the content better because I actually want to just to feel like a better human being. "

"I feel ignorant and naive not knowing why things happen or what even happens within our own planet and the ones that surround us. It makes me feel like a better informed individual the more I learn about astronomy."

"I find that the fact that you list what will be expected to be know on the midterm helpful, that it will be on Ch2-4 and use the quizzes and that you include past midterms for studying. I know you don't want to make it too easy on us but if there was a more concrete study guide that included what would be included from the book, which I know is already put on the quizzes it's just that I don't know if I found the correct answers or not for any of the questions and so I could be studying something that is completely incorrect."

"Something that has helped me a little is knowing ahead of time what will be on the midterm, like the review you put up and old quizzes."

"The most helpful thing to me when studying for this midterm is to study with a partner. It's easier to remember things when you explain them and talk over them with another person. And if you both don't get it at least you don't feel so alone."

"It would be helpful to have a study guide with intense detail on what exactly we need to study for. I know we have some guidelines, but a more specific study guide would help, but then again the first midterm you have in a course you don't know what to expect. To study for the midterm I reviewed the quizzes also went through the chapters that I fully didn't understand."

"Flash cards help me and going over the material over and over helps the most! Plus, seeing mistakes I've made on the quizes helps me understand where I need to review the most."

"You know... just reviewing..."

"It helps to draw the diagrams and go over the flashcard questions to quiz myself. It does not help to just read to the book word for word because I get overwhelmed. I think the review in class was great, I would like to be given more time in class to review for midterm 2."

"I just keep reading over the text and notes."

"I think having the quizzes help with studying for the midterm."

"The review cards in the back of the textbook are helpful for studying"

"Remembering to use past quizzes as study guides."

"Using the flashcards defintley helps, along with re skimmig the selected reading assignments that pertain to information that may be presented on the midterm as well as looking over your blog and clicking different topics that I struggle with."

"The flashcard questions!"

"I went through and did both (fall and spring) quizzes over again and depending on the results targeted the majority of my studying to those subjects."

"study ahead of time and ask other students how they are studying."

"I hate the flipped class situation, it doesn't suit well for me. I'm sure other's have been doing well, but it is very different from other teaching techniques and I haven't acquired a taste."

"Reading the book really helps."

"Reading the book has not helped me to study for this exam, the book is too confusing. Reading presentations has helped a little."

"I am really trying to study my notes and the quizzes that I printed out."

"Reading the book helps a lot, but it doesn't help that I have a lot of other homework due as well during this midterm :/"

"Its harder to study for this midterm since I'm used to studying off of notes, but this class doesn't really have notes, but just in class assignments. I do better when I can go home and visually look at my notes and study off of those."

"I personally find reading, then writing the information down over and over again helpful in all subjects."

"Going over the written questions in class last week is something that I think helped me a lot in knowing what to focus on for those."

"The best thing about studying for the midterm is i can write down everything i need to study for, and use quizzes, in-class activities, and last semester midterms for great tools for studying."

"reviewing the past quizzes and in class activities is helpful"

"procrastinating to the last second definitely does not help."
