Online reading assignment: preferential voting on first midterm date

Physics 205B, spring semester 2014
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA

Students have a weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.

The following question was asked (by student request) in order to determine interest in moving the date of the first midterm.
Rank your preference for the date of Midterm 1. (You may skip this question if you have no preference.) Results will be tallied using a referential voting protocol (with elimination).

Wednesday, March 19:  [1st choice.] [2nd choice.] [3rd choice.]
Monday, March 24:  [1st choice.] [2nd choice.] [3rd choice.]
Wednesday, March 26:  [1st choice.] [2nd choice.] [3rd choice.]

Raw results (after eliminating incomplete votes)
Wednesday, March 19 (which was the originally scheduled date):
1st choice 25.8% (8 votes)
2nd choice 25.8% (8 votes)
3rd choice 48.4% (15 votes)

Monday, March 24:
1st choice 29.0% (9 votes)
2nd choice 58.1% (18 votes)
3rd choice 12.9% (4 votes)

Wednesday, March 26:
1st choice 45.2% (14 votes)
2nd choice 16.1% (5 votes)
3rd choice 38.7% (13 votes)

According to preferential voting protocol (with elimination):
http://electionbuddy.com/preferential
http://www.ctl.ua.edu/math103/voting/methodof.htm
A. Count voter's 1st choices, does candidate have a majority?
March 26 = 45.2% [no, only plurality]
B. Eliminate last place candidate.
Eliminate March 19 [25.8% 1st choice votes]
C. Distribute eliminated candidate's ballots.
15 votes for March 24 (over March 26).
16 votes for March 26 (over March 24).

Result: midterm will be moved from Wednesday, March 19 to Wednesday, March 26.
