Education research: post-instruct. feedback on flashcards, reading assignments, homework reports (Cuesta College, Physics 205B, spring semester 2012)

Students taking Physics 205B (college physics, algebra-based, mandatory adjunct laboratory) at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA use flashcards to engage in peer-interaction ("think-(pair)-share") discussion questions during lecture, and complete weekly online reading assignments (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments.

During the last week of instruction, students were given the opportunity to evaluate the instructional components of the course, and the use of flashcards, online reading assignments, and online homework reports (Matthew L. Trawick, The Physics Teacher, vol. 48, no. 2, p. 118) in an online "Learning Resource Survey" hosted by SurveyMonkey.com. Questions from section II are adapted from the Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) survey (developed by Elaine Seymour, Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin-Madison), and questions from section III (III.1, III.3, III.5, and III.7) were adapted from a "Clicker Attitude Survey" (N. W. Reay, Lei Bao, and Pengfei Li, Physics Education Research Group, Ohio State University).

These are the complete survey results. Analysis will be forthcoming after more data has been compiled from future semesters. Values for the mean and standard deviations are given next to the modal response category for each question. Note that the order of questions within sections II, III and V were randomly scrambled for each student.

"I think they're an efficient and effective way of teaching how to utilize the material, although a few more worked out, on board, examples would be good too, just so I'd have some written out problems in my notes for reference while working on homework."

"I like how we dont have to buy anything to participate and how it is anonymous for everyone. The only thing i dont like sometimes is that while im reading the question and understanding it, the flashcards are asked to be put up and i have to rush it and guess or say unsure. i like having the unsure option though it is really nice and helps."

the use of online reading assignments in Physics 205B.
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"Really didnt work well for me at all."

"Online reading assignments are just easy points, but I don't feel like I learn much from them, especially when it is possible to just copy and paste the answer from a google search result, and they don't really get me to open the book."

"The reading assignments online were a great way to prepare for lecture and go in with more background information on the upcoming material."

"Choice of questions are essential, thank you P-Dogg!"

"i found the online reading assignments difficult for the most part. i didn't rely on them to help myself learn the material."

"Online reading assignments forced me to make sure I was familiar with the material before going into the lecture about it, which helped me maximize the effectiveness of the lecture."

"i hardly ever did them, and if i did i would google :("

"n/a"

"I think they're a great way to ensure the proper material was read, and understood, although it'd be cool if they were multiple choice, and would tell us which ones we got wrong and we could go back later and try until we got them right, or something convoluted like that, it'd be a good way to review for tests and the final too."

"i like going over them in class to compare results with the class. it would be nice if there was a chapter and section associated with each question to help me refer to the book while working on them."

"I could never remember to do them!"

"you should make the homework modeled off of mastering chemistry hw. talk to dr. baxley."

"they confused me until i came to lecture"

VIII. (Optional.) Please type in any comments you may have regarding
the use of online homework reports in Physics 205B.
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"I didnt feel too motivated to the hw"

"didnt like the online homework reports...if it werent for you going over the problems, I would have been just absolutely been lost"

"I wish other classmates were honest in their survey results. I don't know more than a small handful of students that actually do the homework until they study for the midterms. Tangible, collected homework would benefit my learning and help keep me motivated to open the book and do the problems. It would also help me not forget to get the easy points of doing the survey. However, the easy points reward students for getting away with not doing the assignments."

"The homework reports were useful for reviewing tough problems in class and preparing for exams. I wouldn't change a thing Dr. Len! I love how your class is laid out... very organized and no confusion about expectations."

"Choice of questions are essential, thank you P-Dogg!"

"the online homework reports very helpful to learn the material. i used them to study for quizzes and the midterms."

"As somebody who usually becomes bored with homework and reaches the level of 'I get it' way before the assignment is actually over, I really appreciated the homework report format. It allowed me to read over homework problems to see if I understood them, and take what I needed from homework rather than waste 3 hours on something I understand."

"<3"

"n/a"

"The homework reports are perfect, I just wished I'd quit forgetting to do them."

"What does Pdawg do over the summer?"

"should be a graded system on line, not earn 4 points by filling things out. i would have a much greater incentive to finish the homework on time and fully complete homework."

"Survey was very useful and convenient. But, maybe there should be daily reminders; a lot of people forget to do the reading and hwk"

"it wasnt quite motivating enough should of collected some homework, especially circuit analysis!!! :)."

Education research: post-instruct. feedback on flashcards, reading assignments, homework reports (Cuesta College, Physics 205B, spring semester 2011)

"Although the students' understanding of the material is important, time management seems paramount when it comes to available class time."

"In general I felt that the flash cards helped me to better understand the concepts from lecture. Even though I don't always understand them, it really helps to go through them and discuss our answers and why we came to the conclusions we did. Helps to work on how to approach certain problems."

"I liked the fact that we could get our initial thoughts out with the flashcards during class and fix any misconceptions relatively quickly following the questions. I just wish there was an answer key to the questions online just in case we wanted to look over them again and just forgot to write the answers to some down in class."

"I felt flashcards were very helpful. Sometimes when I was confused on a subject, they helped clarify it. Flashcards also helped solidify if you really knew a subject or not. I like the interactive nature of flashcards. It makes you think instead of just copying notes down the entire class period."

"The reason I am neutral towards 'completing the online reading assignments was difficult' is because there we some reading assignments that we difficult, but overall they were good."

"Neutral."

"Online reading assignments were ok. I felt they helped to expose me to a topic which even sometimes confused me even more, and sometimes aided in my understanding! Other times they were just frustrating. It depended on the material and how the book covered it."

"I think interacting in class helped me understand the material better. The reading helped, but most of my concerns were resolved in class."

"Sometimes I felt that the reading assignment was helpful and sometimes it was not. I think it would be interesting to do a post-lecture assignment, where you have to answer questions on what you learned. This way you do not feel so 'blind' going into the subject and you can practice what you learned."

the use of online homework reports in Physics 205B.
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"I like how you did a survey on the homework and then attempted to help us better understand the tricky problems in lecture. Also I appreciate you assigning odd problems so we can see and look up the answers so we know if we are on the right track rather than assigning evens, which in my opinion can sometimes cause more harm than good. Ultimately it's up to the individual student to learn the material."

"I'm not sure how my classmates feel about this, but I feel like if the online homework report were multiple choice answers to the questions, and of course saying if we understood the problem or not, students would try harder when doing the problems. I'll admit that sometimes I'd only scan the problem quickly instead of thoroughly doing it. I know it's not right and it doesn't help me if I do that, but when I was extremely busy I would. Sorry."

I think turning in homework assignments would be much more helpful for me. I need that accountability. It is too easy to skim over the problem or think you understand it when you really don't."

Education research: post-instruction feedback on flashcards, reading assignments, homework reports (Cuesta College, Physics 205B, fall semester 2010)

Cuesta College students taking Physics 205B (college physics, algebra-based, mandatory adjunct laboratory) at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA use flashcards to engage in peer-interaction ("think-(pair)-share") discussion questions during lecture, and complete weekly online reading assignments (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments.

VI. (Optional.) Please type in any comments you may have regarding
the use of online home assignments in Physics 205B.
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"a list of what to skip and what to read in a chapter"

"The actually reading assignments themselves were very easy. The hard part was remembering to do them."

"They weren't too hard, but also not that helpfull."

"A lot of the time the reading was too confusing without having lecture first."

"I found that online reading assignments were not very helpful. We would go over things in the reading assignments that werent even covered in lecture. I felt it easier to not read the book and just go off the information taught during class. Also online reading assignments were always different in regards to whether they were on the material we aready covered or what came next so I never knew what to read before doing the assigments. Also I think if you are to continue to do the reading assignments, if it looks as though the class was confused on a specific question, go over that answer right away instead of saying 'we will get to that in lecture' because I could never tell if the question was answered in lecture or not or if you continue to talk about the answers in lecture make sure to address that that was the answer to this specific reading question."

"Being ahead of the class is always helpful."
VII. Answer the following statements which may or may not describe

VIII. (Optional.) Please type in any comments you may have regarding
the use of online home assignments in Physics 205B.
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"better thank clickers?"

"Its easy to forget to do your homework when the means to do it is on the computer ."

"The idea is a good one, but there is no accountability if you don't do the assignment."

"Sometimes the homework problems were helpful but we didn't really have enough class time to go over the problems. Maybe try making time for an example before the homework so that there are less questions after the online assignment???"

"hw is good practice"

"Some questions I had difficulties on were often not on the homework report. it would be helpful to ask if there were any problems not on the report that we may have needed help on."

"I liked the whole method of the class, and how the instructor kept track of every student's steps."

"Solving difficult problems and flash card questions was the best."

"It was harder to motivate myself rather than if we had to turn the homework in but it was nice..."

"I liked it overall"

Presentation: advice to students, from students

This presentation is given at the start of the second day of class, after discussion of the course syllabus and policies at the end of the previous first day of class. These student comments are taken from advice from students at the end of a previous semester (here, Fall 2009), to subsequent semesters of introductory astronomy students at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA.

The first comment is reasonably innocuous and bland.

A more pointed piece of advice.

Words of warning to the "free riders" during group work.

More words of warning to students who just mimic other students' responses, without understanding why/how their answers are correct.

Students should not leave anything unanswered/unresolved before leaving class, if they can help it.

An important resource not to be overlooked.

The last comment always gets a chortle out of many students. Following this last student comment is when the instructor tells the class that the intent of showing these comments is to respond to and expand upon them one-by-one, in order make several points regarding what is expected of students in this class.

Starting over from the first slide, each is addressed point-by-point in more detail:
  • "Not a cake class, but it's fun."
This is relatively straightforward--students already "get this."

  • "Get all points you can (online reading assignments!)."
The first online reading assignment link (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com) is shown, where students answer multiple-choice questions and open-ended response questions regarding concepts previously covered in class, and on material from the textbook to be covered in the next upcoming class. Credit is given primarily for serious completion.

  • "Don't let teammates do all the work in the activities."
Students are assigned into groups of 3-4 each, to work on in-class activities (i.e, "lecture-tutorials"). Students will get as much out of these activities as they put into it.

  • "Genuinely try to get the right answers on flashcard questions."
Test and quiz questions are pointedly adapted from think-pair-share (i.e., "peer-instruction") questions used in class, where students need to be able to explain their reasoning to another student, or at the very least listen to, and critically evaluate the merit of an explanation from a peer.

  • "ASK QUESTIONS. Make sure you understand before you leave."
Students need to make an effort to get intervention and clarification during class.

  • "Study old tests and you'll be golden."
Quizzes and exams from past semesters are posted online (without answers) to be accessible to all students, and not just those with acquaintances that took this course in a previous semester.

  • "Upgrade weapons and save often."
Good advice in nearly any situation, for this generation of students.

The last slide is the generic "time for questions" prompt.

Online homework assignment: destructive thin film reflections

Physics 205B Homework Assignment 4, Spring Semester 2010
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA

Cf. Giambattista/Richardson/Richardson, Physics, 2/e, Problem 25.17

A thin film of oil (n = 1.50) of thickness 0.40e-6 m is spread over a puddle of water (n = 1.33). The two visible wavelengths that will destructively interfere for reflection will have values of __________ nm and __________ nm in air. (Visible wavelengths in air are in the range of 400 nm to 700 nm.)

Correct answer: 400 nm, 600 nm.

Light in air reflects off of the top of the oil film with a 180 degree phase shift ("fast off of slow"). Light in oil reflects off the top of the water with no phase shift ("slow off of fast"). The two reflections are out of phase.

For destructive interference of these two out of phase reflections, the path difference condition is:

delta(l) = m*lambda_oil,

where the path difference between the two reflected waves is twice the thickness of the oil film, or 2*t, and lambda_oil is related to the lambda_air wavelengths in air:

lambda_oil = lambda_air/n_oil,

as wavelengths are shorter in slower media, compared to the longest in air (or vacuum).

Substituting delta(l) = 2*t, and lambda_oil = lambda_air/n_oil into the destructive interference condition for out of phase reflections:

2*t = m*(lambda_air/n_oil),

2*t*n_oil/m = lambda_air,

with m = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., possible wavelengths in air that would destructively interfere would be infinite, 1200 nm, 600 nm, 400 nm, 300 nm, ..., respectively, of which only 400 nm and 600 nm are in the visible range in air.

Student responses
Section 31988
537 nm, 637 nm: 1 response
400 nm, 600 nm: 2 responses
429 nm, 687 nm: 1 response
