Online reading assignment question: helpful/unhelpful Midterm 1 physics study tips

Physics 205A, fall semester 2017
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA

Students have a bi-weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.

Describe something notable that either helped or did not help with studying for this midterm. Selected comments may be discussed in class. (Graded for completion.)

The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"Definitely doing all the problems we've been doing since the beginning of the year, specifically the midterm ones."

"Reading the text and looking at blog problems will be helpful."

"Better understanding how to apply stuff."

"Studying in a group or with a partner who gets it."

"Taking a look at other example problems and FULLY understanding how each of them work."

"A practice midterm in class one or two meetings before the midterm would GREATLY be helpful."

"Individual working, closed notes, and reviewed answers at the end of class type of practice midterm."

"Spend some time on fbd stuff because I think I can do fine with projectile motion."

"Something that really helped was that for the forces, I need to just apply everything to the real world for it to make sense."

"The previous practice quizes...it would be nice if there were answers for them. Just to check my work. I never knew if I was right or not. It would take a much longer time to figure out if I was correct or not instead of just having an answer sheet somewhere."

"Open notes?"

"Studying Newton's laws."

"Redoing past homework assignments and looking over old notes will hopefully help."

"I found that the best help for this class is practice, practice, practice. "

"Knowing the material!"

"Practice problems are very helpful when studying for the midterm."

"I'm just going through a bunch of example problems and seeing what I struggle with."

"I'm trying not to get test anxiety about this, but it's pretty hard not to at the moment."

"Going through the previous midterm questions and practicing those."

"Reviewing prior midterm questions! It has been the most helpful way to practice in my opinion."

"Doing many example problems will be very beneficial while studying for the midterm."

"Definitions in sentences of what is going on with Newton's laws."
