Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA
Students have a bi-weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.
Describe something notable that either helped or did not help with studying for this midterm. Selected comments may be discussed in class. (Graded for completion.)
The following are all of the student responses to this question, verbatim and unedited.
"Forming a study group will help me study for the midterm because two heads are better than one. Also watching the NCAA tournament while trying to study does not help."
"What helped me the most was looking over the equation sheet and making sure I knew everything on there. Also, looking back at the blogs and reading about the basics of each of the topics helped a lot."
"Practicing problems we have already done helps out, in case we mess up we can use the worked out problem as a reference."
"This midterm I went back and looked at all the worksheets and reviewed them with the blog posts."
"I loved that there is an embedded tutor in this class that has helped out a lot to answer questions when I am confused. He especially helped going over problems that can possibly be on the exam. Just to be able to clarify on certain things that are difficult to grasp right away."
"Going back and re-reading and doing the homework assignments and blogs."
"Doing all available example problems you can get your hands on is essential."
"Everything that is on the study guide; I write out all of the equations and some example problems for so that I can go over it all."
"As long as concepts are understood and you know how to apply the equations, the problems are really not that bad."
"[The embedded tutor] helps."
"Just making sure to get the general idea of everything."
"I liked being able to go over problems and see the answers and what is expected."
"Going through the formula sheet."
"I enjoy the abundant practice problems with answers provided on the website as well as the practice questions we do in lecture that are similar to those that are going to be on the midterm."
"Something that helps is definitely working through the example problems that are posted online for us to do! It is good to be able to work through those problems, try and perfect it, and understand the underlying concepts/equations used to be able to answer a problem that is similar to it."
"Going over the practice problems is extremely helpful when studying for the midterm."
"Re-doing and understanding past quizzes. "
"Studying with a friend helps a lot."
