Online reading assignment: quantum leaps, sun's outer layers (SLO campus)

Astronomy 210, fall semester 2014
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA

Students have a weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.

The following questions were asked on reading textbook chapters and previewing presentations on quantum leaps, and the sun's outer layers.

Selected/edited responses are given below.

Describe something you found interesting from the assigned textbook reading or presentation preview, and explain why this was personally interesting for you.
"When electron drop down to inner orbits, then they will give off certain photons corresponding to certain colors."

"How astronomy ties in with physics and chemistry. I never really thought about atoms with astronomy."

"How you related miso soup and lava lamps to the sun's surface. The relation helped me understand the context better."

"I found interesting that I've always looked at miso soup and watched it, but I've never thought about the reason why it does what it does. And now knowing about how convection works, it totally makes sense and I can't wait to go have a hot bowl of miso soup!"

"I thought it was really cool how atoms can be colorless, but then when put in a discharge tube it can light up."

"That sunspots were cooler due to strong magnetic fields."

"The fact that we have different-colored neon signs not because of the color of the light or glass but because of the different types of gas atoms inside."

Describe something you found confusing from the assigned textbook reading or presentation preview, and explain why this was personally confusing for you.
"Photons, and the way they work with electrons."

"I don't understand the photon rules at all."

"I don't understand what a photon is!"

"It's hard to take in all the terms and remember them, there is a lot in this chapter."

Ask the instructor an anonymous question, or make a comment. Selected questions/comments may be discussed in class.
"I really don't like the sun anymore."

"Why is miso soup relevant? Why should I care about miso soup?" (Because, it's delicious. Also, physics.)

"Do we have class the Wednesday before Thanksgiving?" (Yes. But it's just a movie night for extra-credit.)

"Instead of taking a break would you ever consider letting the class vote on getting out early?" (But what if I need to take a break?)

"This chapter hurt my brain."

"Didn't like missing last week's class. Feels like I missed a lot. The classroom discussions bring it all together."
