Online reading assignment: quantum leaps, sun's outer layers (NC campus)

Astronomy 210, spring semester 2014
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, CA

Students have a weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.

The following questions were asked on reading textbook chapters and previewing presentations on quantum leaps, and the sun's outer layers.

Selected/edited responses are given below.

Describe something you found interesting from the assigned textbook reading or presentation preview, and explain why this was personally interesting for you.
"I liked how you used neon glowing signs as an example to explain how the interactions of different gases emits light with varying colors. This was interesting to me because it made an abstract idea more tangible by using something we are familiar with as an example. I like it when science is relevant in a way that I can relate it to something I've personally encountered. It helped me understand what I had read in the book better."

"I found it interesting that the dark sunspots are the cooler regions of the suns surface."

"I enjoyed learning about the excitation of atoms because it was completely foreign to me before I read the section."

"The sun is a powerful and somewhat scary thing."

Describe something you found confusing from the assigned textbook reading or presentation preview, and explain why this was personally confusing for you.
"Atoms--moving of electrons and photons--I have ALWAYS hated it. I am hoping that you can explain this a bit better so I can understand it."

"Honestly, I am not a science brain. All this stuff confuses me. Some of it is easier to make sense of than the rest! Permitted orbits, quantum mechanics, the Doppler effect, etc. These are among the concepts that confused me the most. In science I can usually grasp physical composition (what is it), but I typically have a hard time when it comes to the processes. Why it is the way it is and what does it do gets me. This stuff stretches me every time."

Ask the instructor an anonymous question, or make a comment. Selected questions/comments may be discussed in class.
"How can I best prepare for the essay portion of the midterm?" (We'll have practice essay questions in a review session on Thursday.)

"Why did you ask us about miso soup? Is that going to affect our grade? Just joking. But seriously, do you like miso soup? If so, do you like wasabi in it? (You should try it, it's sooo good!)"

Kailana in Atascadero has the best miso soup ever."

"Have you ever been able to view the corona during a solar eclipse? If so, how bad-a$$ was it on a scale of 1 to 10?" (I would say 11. Wait, is 1 or 10 good? Is a good thing bad-a$$?)

"I don't understand the topic of atoms."
